Allan Pinkerton (1819-1884)
In 1847 Allan Pinkerton joined the Chicago Police Department. By 1849 he was their first Detective.
In 1850, Pinkerton became a Private Eye, and quickly became a legend.
Francois-Eugene Vidocq may have in part, inspired Allan Pinkerton. The English translation of Vidocq’s exploits were widely distributed throughout America, and would have been familiar to Pinkerton.
